What About the Vibe?

Now that I have a functioning puzzle it is time to choose the kind of music I want for the game. I realize this is not the correct order for game development, but I need some direction right now, and music has always inspired me.

I have compiled three varieties of music that would rest in the background of gameplay, each with their own tone, but equally inspiring. You can play them on a multi-track right by this post.

The first track is very simple, with a futuristic and upbeat melody. It would keep the player engaged, but relatively uninterested in the music itself while playing the game. It is a standard sound to hear in video games, especially simple mobile games that are only interested in keeping the player playing. It is admittedly my least favorite of the three options, but it has its merit.

The second melody is calm and relaxing at first with a pleasant piano riff, then adds elements of a sound board to bring in modern electronic vibes that liven up the tune. This would match with the themes of the game really well. The game would begin with a fresh green, rustic landscape, newly created for a smarter, more insightful human generation to come in and develop. The land itself is beautiful yet simple, the addition of modernism not contrasting or overwhelming what already exists, but melding with it and creating a new sound, that is harmonious with the old. I think this is my favorite option of the three.

The third melody is simpler than the other two. It reminds me of one of my favorite game soundtracks ever from Tony Fox, Undertale. In Undertale, at first listen the compositions and the game play seem overly simplistic, verging on juvenile. But as the game progresses the look and feel of the game start making sense, and having their own meanings. By the end of the game, the simple nature of the game is not an oversight but a choice that provides insight into the world Tony Fox crafted. The music in the game grows as the players mind does, and culminates in an extremely complex and beautiful overture in the end. By using a melody with the same humble beginnings I would give myself room to expand the music outward as the player expands the world.

Have a listen,

Vidya
